Description
Operation: SONGBIRD is a complete, historically inspired espionage mission for the Ashes of Isar role-playing game. Set in 1942 in the occupied Belgian coastal town of Saint-Idesbald, this scenario sends players behind enemy lines to capture American propagandist Mildred Gillars — better known as Axis Sally.
Your agents must slip ashore under cover of darkness, establish contact with a local resistance fighter, locate Gillars, and extract her alive for transport back to England — and if possible, sabotage the radio facility. Every choice carries risk: careless behavior can bring reprisals, endanger civilians, or expose the underground network supporting the team.
Inside this mission you’ll find:
• A complete SOE-style mission briefing
• Accurate historical context and period-authentic details
• NPC dossier, German troop behavior, and resistance personalities
• Rules for forged papers, interrogation checks, stealth movements, and radio transmissions
• Highly detailed mission phases: insertion, contact, surveillance, capture, and extraction
• Optional sabotage objectives involving the broadcast antenna and radio facility
• Difficulty Score (DS) guidance tailored for new or intermediate Ashes of Isar players
• GM tips for tension, roleplay pressure, and realistic enemy response
Tone & Experience
Operation: SONGBIRD focuses on stealth, deception, and moral decision-making rather than open combat. It captures the uncertainty of operating under occupation, where a single misstep can doom the mission — or innocent civilians.
This mission is designed for 2–5 players plus a GM using the Ashes of Isar ruleset. This is an ideal mission for players and GMs new to the game.
